FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
HOW DO I GET TO EVENES, NORWAY?
The easiest way to get to the meeting point is via Oslo Gardermoen airport (OSL code). From there, you fly to Harstad/Narvik Evenes airport (EVE code). Domestic flights in Norway can be purchased from www.sas.no, www.norwegian.no
WHAT LEVEL OF PHOTOGRAPHY IS REQUIRED?
This workshop is open to photographers of all skill levels, including beginners as well as professionals. Our only criteria is that you have a great passion for photography, and have the energy and motivation to be on the go every day and night.
WHAT KIND OF CLOTHING/NON-PHOTOGRAPHY GEAR SHOULD I BRING?
Since we are exploring the high arctic and northern Norway archipelago’s, you have to be well equipped for all kinds of dramatic weather including rainfall. Bring comfortable, warm and waterproof outer layers such as Gore-tex and thin insulation. A complete list of recommended clothes as well as camera gear will be provided upon registration. We don’t have clothes or shoes available for renting.
WILL I EXPERIENCE ICE OR SNOW?
No. The winter months in northern Norway are known to generate a great amount of snowfall, but in September it's too early for that. You will, however, get explosive fall colors though.
WILL I SEE AND PHOTOGRAPH THE NORTHERN LIGHTS?
Yes, most likely. September is one of the best times to photograph the Northern Lights and we will do our best to make sure you capture it on this trip.
WHAT KIND OF WEATHER CAN I EXPECT?
The weather and climate in northern Norway is renowned for being extremely unpredictable because of its many local weather systems. This means conditions can change within minutes which can also result in very dramatic light and photographic opportunities. Lofoten has a much milder climate than other parts of the world at a similar latitude, such as Greenland and Alaska. This is due to the water temperature of the Gulf Stream. The coastal climate results in mild winters and cool summer temperatures. Traditionally, January and February are the coldest months with an average temperature of 30° F. In September however, the average temperature ranges is approximately 50°-60°F.
WHY IS THE ITINERARY NOT MORE SPECIFIC?
We don’t operate with a fixed itinerary on any of our workshops. It’s a full on photography workshop, so the activities are planned around sunrise, sunset and night photography excursions. The whole Lofoten archipelago as well as Senja Island is packed with stunning locations. As such, the weather and light conditions will decide where we will go. While we have a list of locations we will visit throughout the workshop, but we don’t know which day or time of day we will visit a specific location.
WHAT IS THE ACTIVITY LEVEL LIKE?
For our Lofoten Islands, Norway UNIQUE / Workshop, many of our shooting locations will not require hiking of note, however students should be prepared to hike/walk a distance of 1/2 to 1.5 mile (round trip). Terrains we will cover include flat, relatively even terrain, terrain with level changes, rocky areas, sandy beaches, and potentially muddy areas.
Additionally, there are some considerations for our students regarding the physical requirements of our workshops and in-field shooting sessions. Students should be able to:
-
Walk unassisted over uneven terrain while carrying their camera equipment
-
Traverse and manage terrain that includes uneven rocks, loose sand/gravel, mud, snow, ice, and level changes
-
Stand or be on their feet for several hours
-
Successfully maneuver and negotiate walking at night by flashlight in rocky, sandy, snowy, or muddy environment
