BOLIVIA

When: March 6-14, 2027
Style: Astro-Landscape
Activity Rating: Moderate
Max Students: 10
Includes: Lodging, Meals, and Transportation During Workshop!

Step into one of the most surreal landscapes on Earth and photograph Bolivia at its most cinematic. This immersive 319 Photography UNIQUE / Workshop is built around the otherworldly beauty of the Salar de Uyuni and the high-altitude deserts of the Altiplano - where mirror-like salt flats stretch to the horizon by day and the Milky Way explodes overhead by night.

Over seven carefully paced days, we chase light across vast salt plains, crimson lagoons, geothermal fields, and sculpted rock valleys. Midday starts allow for rest and acclimation, while evenings are dedicated to golden-hour compositions, sunset reflections, and late-night Milky Way sessions far from any light pollution. This workshop is designed for photographers who want iconic landscapes, rare night-sky opportunities, and thoughtful time in the field - not rushed checklists.

From flamingo-filled red lagoons at sunset to standing beneath the Milky Way outside remote desert lodges, this is a workshop built for photographers who crave epic scale, silence, and the kind of images that feel unreal until you realize you were standing there.

Bolivia doesn’t just photograph well - it changes how you see light, space, and night itself. Join 319 Photography in 2027 and bring home work that feels as vast as the Altiplano.

WORKSHOP ITINERARY

Day 0 – March 6, 2027 – La Paz

  • Plan your arrival to La Paz, Bolivia at anytime on March 6th, 2027. You will enjoy this easy travel day. All you have to do is get to our hotel in La Paz, the rest will be covered, including your lodging for this night! As a group, we will plan to have dinner together this first night and discuss the amazing week ahead!

Day 1 - March 7, 2027 - Uyuni

  • Together, we will all depart La Paz and take the short flight to Uyuni (you are responsible for booking your airfare for this short flight [+/- $300-$400USD], but there's only one flight a day) After arriving in the remote outpost of Uyuni, the gateway to Bolivia’s high-altitude wonders, we will take our time getting settled. Take the afternoon to acclimate, rest, and settle into the rhythm of the Altiplano before gathering for a group dinner and workshop orientation - where the adventure ahead truly begins.

    • It's important to note that we are providing these two acclimation and rest days (March 6 and March 7, 2027) ahead of the trip because we want YOU to be as ready as possible for the adventure ahead! The days and nights will be long from here out and we want everyone to have an absolute amazing adventure! This also allows for seamless travel and provides a bit of buffer if someone is delayed. We are the only company thinking of our students in this way!

Day 2 – March 8, 2027 – Salar de Uyuni

  • Midday departure onto the endless white expanse of the world’s largest salt flat. We photograph minimalist landscapes and vast scale while enjoying lunch surrounded by nothing but horizon. As the light softens, we chase reflections and dramatic skies through sunset before returning to rest. Late that night, we head back onto the salt flats beneath pristine skies to photograph the Milky Way arching overhead an unforgettable first night under the stars.

Day 3 – March 9, 2027 – Uyuni Region

  • Today blends history, culture, and cosmic scale. We begin at the haunting Train Cemetery, then visit Colchani to explore traditional salt handicrafts. Lunch is enjoyed out on the salt flats before another sunset session in ever-changing light. After dinner and rest, we once again return to the flats late at night for another Milky Way shoot - refining compositions with experience gained.

Day 4 – March 10, 2027 – High Desert Altiplano

  • We leave Uyuni behind and push deeper into the Bolivian wilderness. Passing through San Cristóbal, we break for lunch in Villa Alota before exploring the wetlands and wildlife of the Alota wetlands. The afternoon unfolds among towering formations in the Valley of Rocks, followed by a remote desert sunset. After dinner in Villa Mar, we venture out at midnight for a true high-desert night tour and Milky Way session under impossibly dark skies.

-

Day 5 – March 11, 2027 – Lagoons & Volcanoes

  • An early departure brings us to the serene Laguna Capina, followed by a soak near natural hot springs. After lunch, we cross the surreal Dalí Desert, where erosion mimics abstract art, and continue to the emerald waters of the Green Lagoon. We overnight near the hot springs, photographing the Milky Way directly outside our lodging in the thin, crystal-clear air.

Day 6 – March 12, 2027 – Geysers & Red Lagoons

  • Steam rises from the earth at the Sol de Mañana, an otherworldly geothermal field alive with motion and sound. We continue to the striking Laguna Colorada, home to flamingos and deep crimson water. After lunch in Huayllajara and a rest period, we return to Laguna Colorada for sunset as colors ignite across the landscape. Dinner follows, with another Milky Way session beneath vast desert skies.

Day 7 – March 13, 2027 – Return to Uyuni

  • An early start leads us to the iconic Stone Tree, then onward to the expansive Laguna Pastos Grandes and another pass through the Valley of Rocks. We return via San Cristóbal and enjoy lunch back in Uyuni before resting. One final evening takes us onto the salt flats for a farewell sunset, followed by a last Milky Way session - closing the journey where it began, beneath infinite skies.

Day 8 – March 14, 2027 – Departure

  • Transfer to the airport and departure - bringing an end to an extraordinary journey through Bolivia’s most surreal and photogenic landscapes.

NOTE: Our itineraries are always fluid and may change due to shooting conditions or opportunities.  We will always strive to put our students in the best positions and locations to capture epic images.  Outside of Day 1 of the workshop, specific times of the above-listed itinerary may change as necessary.

HAVE SPECIFIC GEAR QUESTIONS?

We want YOU to get the most you possibly can from our UNIQUE / Workshops.

Part of getting the most you can from our Workshops is making sure you have the right gear for this style of photography.  Unfortunately, not all digital cameras and lenses are made equal.  That said, we will work with whatever you have to help you create memorable images.

If you have any questions, whatsoever, concerning cameras, lens, tripods, intervalometers, laptops, or other accessories, please reach out to Tony via email at tony@319photography.com and he will gladly help you choose the right gear for the workshop.

WHAT IS THE CLIMATE LIKE?

March on Bolivia’s Altiplano brings a dramatic but photographer-friendly mix of conditions, combining mild daytime temperatures with very cold nights - especially during late Milky Way sessions.

In Uyuni and the Salar de Uyuni, daytime highs typically range from 61–67°F (16–19°C), while nighttime lows fall to around 37–40°F (3–4°C); winds and open exposure on the salt flats can make nights feel colder than the numbers suggest. March is late wet season, meaning there is a real possibility of standing water on the salt flats, which can produce the iconic mirror-reflection scenes this location is famous for.

As we move deeper into the South Lípez high desert—including lagoons, geysers, and volcanic landscapes at elevations approaching 13,000–16,000 ft (4,000–4,900 m)—conditions become noticea
bly colder and more extreme: daytime temperatures often hover in the 40s–50s°F (5–12°C), while nighttime and pre-dawn Milky Way sessions can dip to or below freezing (32°F / 0°C). Expect strong sun during the day, wind throughout, rapidly dropping temperatures after sunset, and occasional passing clouds or storms typical of the season.

Photographers should plan for layered clothing, cold-weather night shooting, wind protection, and battery management, balancing comfort with the incredible reward of reflections, dramatic skies, and some of the darkest, clearest night skies on Earth.

WHAT IS THE ACTIVITY LEVEL LIKE?

This activity level of our Bolivia UNIQUE / Workshop is best described as MODERATE, overall, with the challenges coming less from hiking and more from altitude, travel over bumpy roads, and late-night / early morning shooting. Most photo locations are reached by vehicle, and the on-foot portions are typically short, easy walks on mostly flat terrain (salt flats, lagoon overlooks, geothermal areas), but you’ll be doing that walking at high elevations - often around 12,000 ft / 3,600 m (Uyuni/Salar) and, on the South Lípez circuit, pushing higher at times - so even gentle movement can feel more demanding than it would at sea level.

ACCLIMATION RECCOMENDATION

Because much of this workshop takes place at high elevation, we strongly recommend that participating photographers arrive in Bolivia several days early to acclimate. To this point, we have built in acclimation days at the beginning of the itinerary - and we are covering your lodging and meals for those days. These initial days are not just throw away days. We will plan to have photography instruction during these days, but it is important that acclimation occurs! Arriving early is one of the most effective ways to help your body adjust to altitude, reduce fatigue and headaches, and ensure you’re feeling strong and clear-headed for long shooting days and late-night Milky Way sessions. Proper acclimatization will greatly enhance both your comfort and your photographic experience throughout the trip.

OPTIONAL: Those who wish to can spend an additional 2–3 days in La Paz prior to the workshop. This will only help your acclimation. If you choose to do this, you will be responsible for your own meals and lodging on any days prior to those listed on the itinerary.

WHICH NIGHTS ARE INCLUDED AND WHERE ARE WE STAYING?

Tuition for this workshop INCLUDES TOTAL EIGHT NIGHTS single occupancy lodging beginning Saturday, March 6, 2027 through our last lodging night, Saturday, March 13, 2027.

Lodging on this workshop is intentionally chosen to support strong photography days and late-night Milky Way sessions, not unnecessary luxury. In Uyuni, we will stay in a comfortable hotel that allows you to properly rest, recharge batteries, back up images, and reset between afternoon salt flat shoots, sunset sessions, and late-night returns from the field. These nights provide a stable base while we work the Salar de Uyuni multiple times in changing conditions.

As we transition deeper into the Altiplano, accommodations shift to remote desert lodges in areas such as Villa Mar and near high-desert lagoons and hot springs. These lodges are selected for location and access, placing us close to sunrise, sunset, and night-sky subjects so you spend less time driving and more time shooting. Several nights include Milky Way photography immediately outside or within short walking distance of the lodging, meaning no long late-night transfers - step outside, shoot, and return to warmth and rest.  In these areas, you can expect simple, clean, and functional accommodations that prioritize proximity, efficiency, and recovery in one of the most remote photographic regions on the planet.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND THIS WORKSHOP?

This workshop is for photographers of ALL SKILL LEVELS who LOVE adventure, amazing night sky photography, stunning landscapes and have the desire to capture stellar images all while improving their abilities as an artist!

Our workshops are designed to TEACH first and foremost!  If you are looking to learn and grow as a photographer, our workshops are the right choice for you!

FLIGHTS

No matter how early you arrive in Bolivia for acclimatization (including time spent in La Paz), all participants must plan to arrive in La Paz, Boliva on March 6, 2027. This is the official meet-up day for the workshop.

Flying to La Paz
You will fly internationally into La Paz, Bolivia (LPB). Most travelers from the United States will route through a major South American hub such as Lima, Bogotá, Santiago, or Santa Cruz, depending on your departure city and airline. The primary airlines servicing La Paz include LATAM, Avianca, and BoA (Boliviana de Aviación).

Flying to Uyuni
On March 7, 2027, you will take a short domestic flight (approximately 1.5–2 hours) from La Paz to Uyuni (UYU), typically operated by BoA. You will need to book this flight on your own, and we strongly recommend booking early due to limited seat availability. In most cases, the group will be scheduled on the same flight or closely timed flights. For reference, the cost for this flight is +/- $300 - $400 USD.

We are happy to help you review routes, timing, and flight options to ensure a smooth arrival - just reach out if you’d like assistance planning your travel.

SPOUSES AND GUESTS

319 Photography typically welcomes our students to bring along guests and spouses during our CONUS workshops for an extremely small supplemental fee; however, logistics for NON-CONUS workshops, like our Bolivia Workshop, are too limiting to allow guests and spouses at rates cheaper than full fare.

The available 10 slots for this workshop are for 10 total participants, whether or not they are photographers.
