NORDIC
LIGHT & COLOR

When: September 12-19, 2026
Style: Landscape & Aurora
Activity Rating: Easy / Mild
Max Students: 10
Includes: Lodging, Meals, and Transportation During Workshop!

Join us on a 7-day photographic expedition through the untamed beauty of Abisko, Sweden, and the hidden gems of remote Northern Norway. This is more than a workshop—it's an immersive adventure into the heart of the Arctic during one of the most visually spectacular times of the year.

We’ll journey through landscapes ablaze with fall colors, from golden birch forests to crimson-tinted tundra. You'll explore dramatic river gorges carved through ancient rock, capture sweeping mountain vistas, and discover secret, off-the-beaten-path locations known only to locals. Each day brings new terrain, fresh compositions, and unforgettable views.

As night falls, the adventure continues under the stars. Situated in one of the world’s best regions for aurora activity, you’ll have an exceptional chance to witness—and photograph—the Northern Lights in all their glory. Whether arching across the sky in subtle greens or exploding in curtains of vibrant color, the aurora offers a truly magical experience you’ll never forget.

This journey combines expert instruction, remote exploration, and the thrill of chasing light across some of Scandinavia’s most awe-inspiring wilderness. Come ready for adventure, discovery, and the photographic journey of a lifetime.

NOTE: This journey is both a standalone option and a continuation of our Predators of Finland workshop. Depending on how you are joining us, your point of arrival may vary.

HAVE SPECIFIC GEAR QUESTIONS?

We want YOU to get the most you possibly can from our UNIQUE / Workshops.

Part of getting the most you can from our Workshops is making sure you have the right gear for this style of photography.  Unfortunately, not all digital cameras and lenses are made equal.  That said, we will work with whatever you have to help you create memorable images.

If you have any questions, whatsoever, concerning cameras, lens, tripods, intervalometers, laptops, or other accessories, please reach out to Tony via email at tony@319photography.com and he will gladly help you choose the right gear for the workshop.

WHAT IS THE CLIMATE LIKE?

The weather and climate in northern Norway and Northern Sweeden is renowned for being extremely unpredictable because of its many local weather systems. This means conditions can change within minutes which can also result in very dramatic light and photographic opportunities.

That said, this area has a much milder climate than other parts of the world at a similar latitudes.  The coastal climate results in mild winters and cool summer temperatures. Traditionally, January and February are the coldest months with an average temperature of 30° F. In September however, the average temperature ranges is approximately 50°-60°F.

Historically, September does not see much, if any, snowfall in these areas (however it cannot be ruled out completely). Rain gear is a must for this trip as rain chances may occur.

WHAT IS THE ACTIVITY LEVEL LIKE?

For our Nordic Light & Color UNIQUE / Workshop, many of our shooting locations will not require hiking of note, however students should be prepared to hike/walk a distance of 1/2 to 1.5 mile (round trip). Terrains we will cover include flat, relatively even terrain, terrain with level changes, rocky areas, sandy beaches, and potentially muddy areas.

Additionally, there are some considerations for our students regarding the physical requirements of our workshops and in-field shooting sessions. Students should be able to:

  • Walk unassisted over uneven terrain while carrying their camera equipment

  • Traverse and manage terrain that includes uneven rocks, loose sand/gravel,  mud, snow, ice, and level changes

  • Stand or be on their feet for several hours

  • Successfully maneuver and negotiate walking at night by flashlight in rocky, sandy, snowy, or muddy environment

If you have specific questions about the physical aspects of our workshops, contact Tony via email at tony@319photography.com
